COP28: ​​EdDesign Mag Highlights

With extreme weather events affecting people around the globe, this year’s UN climate change conference, COP28, is a pivotal opportunity to accelerate action in the terms of the climate crisis. Since the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP) has gathered member countries every year to identify and assess climate measures.

This year COP28 will take place from 30 November until 12 December 2023 in UAE. EdDesign Mag prepared a list of events we think you would really be interested in.

Student Energy Summit (SES) 2023

1 DEC / 10:00-17:00 (GST)

 

Taking place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Student Energy Summit 2023 will be the world’s largest youth-led energy event, providing a transformative space for young people to collaborate on energy solutions with industry leaders. SES will bring together 650+ young people and energy sector leaders from over 150 countries to the United Arab Emirates for a collaborative, multidisciplinary forum.

SES 2023 will be hosted by New York University Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with Student Energy, a global youth-led organization working with a network of 50,000 young people from over 120 countries, alongside the headline sponsor for this year’s event, the Bezos Earth Fund, the largest individual philanthropic commitment made to fight climate change and protect nature. SES is hosted biannually in a new city around the globe. At the margins of COP28, SES will be coming to the Middle East for the first time, highlighting the success story and vision of the UAE’s energy transition.

Leaders’ Event: Youth & Education — The Latent Force of Climate Action

Elevating youth and underrepresented voices in the UNFCCC process is a key priority of the COP28 Presidency. The Youth and Education event at the WCAS will bring together Heads of State, Heads of Delegation, non-state actors, youth and children, and educators from diverse backgrounds to establish mechanisms for upscaling the role and solidifying the vital voices of youth and educators in addressing the climate crisis. Youth and children will share their vision for climate policy and ambition for COP28 and beyond, including through the Global Youth Statement. The event will also spotlight the need to fund climate education and build resilience in education systems and highlight the importance of the education climate nexus.

RewirEd Summit

The RewirEd Summit at COP28 will place education at the forefront of the climate agenda by convening climate and education actors united in their commitment towards global education transformation as a powerful solution to achieve climate ambitions and education goals. The Summit will bring together diverse voices and sectors to align agendas, commitments, and financing. It will share and inspire solutions, ensuring that climate agendas and investments are linked to education priorities, and that education strategies and commitments respond to the climate agenda today and in the future. ActNowFilm showcase and panel

8 DEC / 15:00-16:30 (GST)

 

ActNowFilm, showcasing in the Green and Blue Zone at COP28, features around 30 global climate experts and youth climate leaders. It will showcase how young people can have credible, valuable and informative conversations with renowned climate experts and that there should be official processes and opportunities for young people to join national climate negotiation teams.

Education Ministerial Meeting

8 DEC / 19:30–20:30 (GST)

 

The Education Ministerial will result in greater commitment from nations to address climate education. This will meet needs of youth, educators and future workforce demands in K-12, higher education and vocational training.
