The GCC region has many schools from across the world that cater to the needs of the expat population. In a recently published news report, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, was quoted as saying, “The Indian government supports initiatives to start schools in Gulf countries teaching the Indian curriculum.”
The minister from the South Asian nation also added that starting new Indian schools in the Gulf nations depends upon the expat community’s requirements, and the plan is also subject to obtaining various approvals from local educational authorities of the respective GCC countries.
With the UAE attracting global talent for its economic growth and quality of life, it’s, indeed, great news for the Indian expat community residing in the United Arab Emirates.
Founded in 1961, the Indian High School (IHS), Dubai, is the first and oldest Indian educational institution in the UAE. The school started in a small villa with just five students back then, according to its website. In 1975, the IHS became affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
The UAE capital’s oldest Indian school is St Joseph’s School, which was founded in 1967 in Abu Dhabi. One of the other oldest Indian schools is Abu Dhabi Indian School, which was initially based at the old Indian Social Center (ISC) premises in the year 1975.
According to the news report by WAM, there are about 106 Indian schools in the UAE, followed by Saudi Arabia with 37 schools and Kuwait with 26, respectively. There are 217 Indian schools in GCC countries, Muraleedharan said, as reported by the report.
